At just 18, Billy Wilder from Lancaster, UK, embarked on an ambitious project—turning an old, neglected boat into a beautiful floating home. Billy has always had a knack for restoration and creative projects. Having previously restored a Volkswagen van by himself, he was no stranger to hands-on work. However, transforming a rusted, abandoned boat into a cozy and stylish home was his biggest challenge yet. In just two months, he turned what many saw as scrap into a remarkable living space for his family.
From Rust to Luxury: A Bold Investment
Billy purchased the boat for £5,000 (roughly 400,000 rubles), a deal made possible thanks to financial support from his mother. Reflecting on the experience, he shared, “Renovating this boat was an incredible journey. Creating a home for my family on water was both exciting and challenging. Everything had to be rebuilt from scratch.”
The boat, originally priced at £12,000, was sold at a discount due to its poor condition. Billy and his family then invested an additional £2,800 to furnish and customize it. Now, the floating home features spacious accommodations, a fully functional bathtub, glass doors opening onto the deck, and even repurposed Audi car seats for comfortable seating.
A Floating Summer Retreat
Billy describes his floating home as a country retreat on the water, offering the perfect escape for family vacations. Despite the intensive labor involved, he never felt overwhelmed—each day brought him closer to his dream of creating a unique home.
To create an open, airy space, he removed walls and installed wooden beams and metal supports for structural integrity. Preferring a natural aesthetic, he handcrafted the kitchen and dining areas, using quality wood and durable materials. Glass doors from the living room open onto the deck, seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces.
His sister was also given a dedicated room, which she decorated with their mother’s help, adding curtains and charming details to personalize the space. Outside, Billy designed a stunning terrace, complete with a cozy lounge area for relaxing in the sun.
A New Way to Travel and Unwind
Now fully renovated, the boat has become the family’s favorite getaway. They have already traveled hundreds of kilometers along canals and the coastline, making unforgettable memories aboard their one-of-a-kind home.
“We love the freedom of traveling this way,” Billy shared. “It’s a completely different experience, and we get to enjoy quality time as a family while exploring new places.”
